My Story!

After earning my Physics degree from UCLA, I shifted my focus to product development

Customers would bring me their ideas, even just sketches on napkins, and I turned them into reality. I created CAD models, provided detailed drawings, printed prototypes, machined necessary parts, and assisted with patent work. It was very fulfilling to see my customers go into business and succeed doing sales. I used 3d printing extensively and was a very early adopter. I purchased my first (and by no means my last) 3d printer way back in 2013. A SeemeCNC Rostock Max V1

Bought it back in the days when tweaking and modifying were the norm. Learned so much about the ins and outs of 3D printing. Still have it and still creating awesome stuff!

Of course, once you have one you must have another, and another, and another! My 3D-printed prototypes were fully functional and only took a few days each to complete, which was a big improvement over earlier methods. However, due to the cost and the time required to print the parts, they proved to be impractical when the customer returned with a request for thousands of units

After getting countless requests for small parts runs, I started thinking, “I need to address this. I have great customers who need affordable plastic parts quickly to bring their businesses to life.”

Realizing that producing a small batch of plastic parts was not only prohibitively expensive but also required several months of lead time, I needed to come up with a creative solution

Why not consider UV curing resin? With its vast range of options, UV curing resins rival and even exceed the variety and capabilities of traditional thermoplastics, making it a great alternative to bypass the constraints of regular injection molding

Coming up with a great idea and turning it into reality are two very challenging tasks. Great ideas are more common than you might think; people have them all the time. But having the determination and perseverance to bring those ideas to life is an uncommon and highly valuable trait

The first step in bringing a great idea to life is sharing it with the public to see if it resonates with others who may not be familiar with it. Events like the Rocky Mountain RepRap Festival and the Midwest RepRap Festival are perfect for this. They gather people and potential customers who can check out your product, ask questions, and offer valuable feedback to help refine it

This is an early version of PhotonCast! showcased at the Midwest RepRap Festival 2022. In the initial designs, the mold was rotated with the intention of evenly illuminating it to achieve a uniform wall thickness

Never content and always striving for better, I incorporated your fantastic suggestions to significantly enhance PhotonCast! by enclosing the rotating structure and upgrading the electronics and built-in software. Just in time for the 2023 Rocky Mountain RepRap Festival!

With great suggestions from visitors and friends at the Rocky Mountain RepRap Festival, I experimented with an improved design that eliminated the need for rotation while maintaining uniform wall thickness. By using a 360-degree bath of specially tuned UV light to illuminate the curing chamber, I achieved consistent curing without needing to rotate the mold, which reduced both cost and complexity!

And now, I present to you!

With your excellent suggestions, after five years of hard work, countless hours of dedication, and overcoming significant financial and personal challenges, PhotonCast is finally here! Get yours today!

The Old Way

Traditional plastic manufacturing is a laborious process requiring many steps and extremely expensive machinery.

How many steps are there? Let’s count them!

First, you need the mold. Plastic injection molds are crafted from extremely expensive metal molds that can take months to produce and often cost well over $1 million each! And if you need to modify it, you’re in trouble—that usually means creating an entirely new mold with the same hefty cost and delay.

Not with PhotonCast! A mold can be created using silicone rubber and optional 3D printing with molds typically being finished and ready within one for less than $20! Otherwise, you’re left with the option of buying or renting an injection molding machine or paying a shop to handle the work for you. Just open your checkbook—need I say more?

PhotonCast is simple to use, requiring no expensive machinery, high pressure, or extreme temperatures—no hassle at all! Plus, no special training is needed.

Processes like embedded electronics, encapsulated parts, layered carbon fiber, or metal filling? Good luck achieving those with injection molding.

PhotonCast? Not a problem at all. Embedding electronics, encapsulated parts, layered carbon fiber, Metal filling. No problem at all with PhotonCast!

With the PhotonCast method, it’s simple:

1) Print the mold or have it printed for you, typically costing under $20—much better than the usual $150,000 for a traditional injection mold!

2) Pour the UV-curing resin into the mold.

3) Place the mold into PhotonCast, press a button, and wait less than a minute. Voila! A finished part in just 1 minute—not 10 hours, not 1 hour, but 1 minute.

4) Repeat! You can easily produce plastic parts from start to finish in 2 minutes or less.

Yes, that’s right, 2 minutes or less! Need to make 200 parts? Normally, each part might take 6 hours. Let’s do the math: 6 hours × 60 minutes per hour × 200 parts = 72,000 minutes, or 50 days! Not with PhotonCast! Each part takes just 2 minutes. That’s 2 minutes × 200 parts = 400 minutes. 400 minutes ÷ 60 = 6 hours and 35 minutes! Fast enough to complete the entire order within a single day, with time for lunch and breaks! It costs just pennies per part, not tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Finish your order in a day, not months!
